Flannel Flowers – Quiet Bloom
Flannel Flowers — Quiet Bloom explores the delicate Australian flannel flower through a richly layered field of deep blue, indigo and turquoise.
The flowers appear to emerge from the darkness in varying stages of clarity, their pale petals creating luminous points across the composition. Behind them, expressive blue-green forms and fine linear marks create an intricate underlying landscape, suggesting foliage, movement and fragments of a remembered place.
The painting moves between botanical observation and abstraction. The flowers remain recognisable, but the surrounding forms are increasingly expressive and textural, allowing the viewer to experience the work as an immersive landscape rather than simply a study of flowers.
There is a tension between complexity and quiet. The surface is alive with marks and overlapping forms, yet the deep ground creates space for your eye to pause and move slowly through the painting.
It speaks to the idea that has become increasingly important in my work: the Australian landscape as a place where memory, observation and stillness meet.
